Red Deer Minute: Canada Day, Traffic Enforcement, and an Expensive Hyperloop Dream

Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics

This Week In Red Deer:

  • With summer underway, it's not going to be a very busy week at City Hall with only one meeting scheduled after a second one was cancelled.

  • That one meeting with be a City Council Regular Meeting at 1:30 pm today. At the meeting, Councillors will discuss a Human Resources Matter in camera (in secret), receive a report on the Central Alberta Women's Emergency Shelter, and discuss a couple of Land Use Bylaws. The cancelled meeting was a City Council Regular Meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

  • Council is also planning to convert the land that Red Deer Polytechnic sits on from a "Public Service District" to a "Post-Secondary Institution District". This new zoning designation would allow the Polytechnic to build additional things such as residences and commercial ventures that wouldn't otherwise be allowed.

Last Week In Red Deer:

  • We hope you had a great Canada Day. It was hot. Really hot! Red Deerians were out in abundance at Westerner Park and it's good to see things finally getting somewhat back to normal!

  • With a new month come new locations for mobile traffic enforcement. As usual, the provided locations are so generic, it might as well just say "anywhere".

  • A hyperloop project between Calgary and Edmonton could start testing as early as 2022. Although a mega-project of this magnitude could be both a great technological innovation and a job creation opportunity, the question remains whether it will ever be practical given the expected $30+ billion cost. Incredibly, that price tag doesn't even include a stop in Red Deer, which would supposedly add another billion dollars to the cost!
