Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics
This Week In Red Deer:
-
It’s going to be a busy week at City Hall, with five meetings scheduled starting on Monday with a City Council Meeting at 1:30 pm. The chief purpose of this meeting will be to go In Camera (in secret) to discuss the new permanent shelter.
-
On Tuesday, there will be a meeting of the Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services at 5:00 pm. At this meeting, Council will receive an FCSS specialist report and discuss a financial matter (also In Camera). On Wednesday, there will be a meeting of the Municipal Planning Commission at 9:00 am, where the Commission will recommend a tree removal on 6258 Cronquist Drive.
- Also on Wednesday, at 2:00 pm, there will also be a meeting of the Emergency Advisory Committee, which is set to report on Red Deer's state of local emergency. Finally, on Thursday, there will be another City Council Meeting, but we can’t yet say why or what it will cover, as there is not yet a publicly available agenda for the meeting.
Last Week In Red Deer:
- Monday evening featured five of the six mayoral candidates in a virtual debate that covered everything from downtown issues to pandemic division and climate change. By the end of the night, it appeared that the pandemic and homeless shelter were the most contentious issues. Indeed, the majority of the candidates agreed that these were the issues that seemed to be creating the greatest divide not just among their constituents but among the candidates.
-
Dr. Vincenzo Aliberti, an author, business strategist, and mental health advocate, has been chosen as the very first Executive Director for the Red Deer Dream Centre. The new clinical drug and alcohol recovery centre is set to open sometime in early 2022.
- Finally, the former Peacock Inn drive-thru on 49th Avenue is set for demolition later today. The building had most recently been a Taco Time restaurant, and Taco Time is hoping to re-open in the mall that is planned to be built on the vacant site.
