Red Deer Minute: Issue 203

Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics

📅 This Week In Red Deer: 📅

  • The Red Deer Regional Airport is expanding its ambitions along with its runways. At its annual public meeting, airport officials laid out progress on a major expansion project, including new land access and development zones. CEO Nancy Paish emphasized the airport's unique position: debt-free, land-owning, and quick to adapt. Plans include aviation industry partnerships, workforce development, and even a solar project. However, a key hurdle remains - the airport’s bid for customs services was denied, limiting international charter flights. Officials hope continued advocacy will change that.

  • City Councillors are bracing for tough financial decisions ahead, with 2026 budget planning already underway. While tax increases are expected, Administration says they will likely be more modest than this year’s 10.35% jump. Councillors warned of troubling trends: a 16% rise in expenses since 2021 and a $68 million drop in reserves since 2020. A new financial roadmap will be presented in June, aimed at tightening spending, restoring reserves, and evaluating which services the City should continue providing. Council will debate cost-cutting proposals, including inflation-tied budgets and potential departmental freezes, later this month.

  • The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce is urging City Council to pursue “transformational change” as it finalizes a financial roadmap. The Chamber CEO, Scott Robinson, says the City must address its reliance on reserve funds and rising costs through structural reform, not short-term fixes. He suggests exploring private partnerships, divesting underused assets, and stepping back from services like electricity, land development, and economic development. With the roadmap expected in June, the Chamber wants Council to prioritize core services and take bold action to stabilize finances and attract private investment.

  • Alberta’s Ministry of Infrastructure says the Red Deer hospital expansion is not paused, despite a widely shared social media post claiming otherwise. Officials confirmed that the second phase of the project, which includes an ambulatory clinic, is shifting from a Public-Private Partnership model to a design-build approach due to a lack of value for money. Construction on the main patient tower has already begun. While some critics raised concerns about delays and transparency, the government says work continues and the overall project is still expected to wrap up by 2030 or 2031.

  • The 111-year-old J.J. Gaetz House is undergoing revitalization into an eco-cultural hub for the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society. The City allocated $600,000 for the project, which was initially paused due to other priorities but resumed once the necessary building permits were nearing completion. Renovations include structural repairs to the veranda, updating the interior to meet modern building codes, and creating classroom spaces and offices. The building's historical elements, like the gabled roof and dormer windows, will be preserved. The project is expected to finish by early 2026, with IMC Construction Ltd. managing the transformation. The house, originally built in 1914 by John Jost Gaetz, was turned over to the City in 2021. While we’re evaluating budget priorities, should this have been one?
