Recreation admission fees, facility rentals, and cemetery services in Red Deer will rise starting September 1st. Admission to facilities such as the Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre, and Michener Aquatic Centre will see daily rates increase between 40 and 70 cents depending on the location. The monthly Recreation All Access Pass will also rise, with adult passes moving from $49.65 to $53.10 along with similar increases for seniors, students, youth, children, and families. Facility rental fees will go up by 4%, while cemetery services will also see higher rates. City officials said the changes were part of the 2024-25 budget and reflect staffing challenges and growing maintenance demands. Despite the hikes, the City says its Fee Assistance Program remains available to ensure recreation and arts opportunities stay accessible for residents.

Mayor Ken Johnston gave his thoughts in an op-ed, calling Red Deer’s recent surge in development a defining moment for the city’s future. He said that, in June, the City issued a record-breaking $1.06 billion in building permits, with $970 million dedicated to the long-awaited Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre redevelopment. Johnston emphasized that the hospital project will not only improve health care but also transform the community, bringing 3,000 to 5,000 new employees and their families to the area. He noted the importance of preparing housing, infrastructure, schools, and services to support this growth. The Mayor also highlighted collaboration with Alberta Health Services and Red Deer Polytechnic to ensure the city can meet health-care staffing and training demands. While the hospital’s full build-out will take years, Johnston stressed that planning must begin now to maximize opportunities. He described the redevelopment as the largest capital investment in Red Deer’s history and a once-in-a-generation chance to reshape the city’s future. Ultimately, he urged residents, businesses, and institutions to work together to build a thriving, innovative Red Deer for the next decade.

Red Deer is calling on residents to apply for openings on Council Committees and the Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board. The City says these roles are a chance to contribute to decision-making, develop leadership skills, and help shape policies affecting local life. Council Committees are volunteer positions with one-to-three-year terms, typically meeting monthly or bi-monthly in the evenings. They are seeking individuals with community commitment, relevant experience, or professional expertise. The Regional Assessment Review Board, meanwhile, is recruiting members to hear property assessment complaints across central Alberta. This role includes paid remuneration, Province-provided training, and a three-year term beginning in January 2026. Full details and application instructions are available on the City's website.
- Phase 2 of the West Park Gardens Redevelopment Project has officially begun, according to the West Park Community Association. The new phase will add features such as an amphitheatre beside the gazebo, a paved path to the amphitheatre, an advanced sledding hill, and benches and picnic tables. Contractors are asking the public to avoid the area during construction and to use caution when it is open. The work is taking place near the gazebo and West Park Community Garden, across from the West Park Shopping Centre on 58 Avenue. The budget for this phase is $205,500, and community members are being encouraged to contribute donations. Phase 1, already completed, included the gazebo, accessible ramps, seating, a BBQ pad, and landscaping improvements.
