Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics

📅 This Week In Red Deer: 📅

  • Postal workers in Red Deer have joined the nationwide strike called by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), with about 30 members of Local 818 picketing at the city’s north end location. The strike follows federal announcements to slow mail delivery, close some post offices, and eventually end door-to-door delivery for most households, citing Canada Post’s financial challenges. Local union President Bill Kilsby emphasized the importance of personal delivery and customer service, warning that the government’s measures would cut jobs and reduce service. CUPW members have been without a contract for 18 months, and previous offers were rejected due to concerns over job security and cutbacks. The union hopes the strike will prompt a new collective agreement and allow employees to return to work. Canada Post warned that operations will be shut down during the strike, causing delays, and that mail and parcels will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once the strike ends.

  • With the Canada Post strike affecting mail delivery, the City of Red Deer is urging residents to use its online portal, MyCity, to manage services like utility billing, property taxes, licences, and permits. City officials say that MyCity provides secure, 24/7 access to account information, and staff are available to help residents set up profiles. Outgoing City mail will be held at City Hall for pickup, while incoming mail can be dropped off in person or via after-hours drop boxes. Payments and invoices remain due on time, with online, in-person, or financial institution options recommended to avoid penalties. Elections Red Deer will use courier services for Special Ballot packages requested before October 14th. The City will continue posting updates on postal disruptions online.

  • Red Deer Regional Airport is preparing to restore scheduled passenger service after seven years, following a series of infrastructure upgrades. Recent improvements include expanding the terminal, widening the main runway, and enhancing road access, allowing the airport to handle over 180 passengers, provide security and baggage services, and accommodate larger aircraft like Boeing 737s. Airport CEO Nancy Paish hopes to establish flights beyond Edmonton and Calgary to destinations such as Vancouver and Toronto, though airlines have shown little interest so far. The airport continues to support charters, medevac flights, and commercial tenants while planning to open 200 acres for aviation-related development by spring 2026, aided by a $30-million provincial grant. Provincial officials see Red Deer as a key part of Alberta’s strategy to increase regional connectivity and are exploring policies to encourage airlines to serve smaller airports.

  • Red Deer Regional Health Centre has welcomed five new anesthesiologists, improving access to surgical and emergency care in central Alberta. Health officials say the new specialists will help reduce wait times and ensure safe, timely procedures for patients. All five doctors received medical training in South Africa, with varying international experience before coming to Red Deer. Alberta Health Services continues to actively recruit physicians in the Central Zone to meet community needs, working with local partners and recruitment committees to attract qualified professionals.

  • Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has renamed its main campus road to Donald Boulevard and the main hall in the Gary W. Harris Canada Winter Games Centre to Donald Family Hall in recognition of the Donald family’s longstanding support. Most recently, the family made a record $20-million donation for healthcare and health-tech programming and applied research, the largest in RDP’s history. Combined with previous contributions of over $6 million, their lifetime giving totals $26 million. Joan Donald emphasized the family’s commitment to supporting education and healthcare, noting the importance of making post-secondary education accessible to the wider community.
