We’re launching a new series of Pints & Politics events across Red Deer, giving residents the chance to meet their City Councillors and have real conversations about City Hall. There will be regular events, and every Councillor will be invited. Attendees are welcome at any event, not just the ones with their own Councillors! The first event will take place on Thursday, February 19th with Councillors Chad Krahn and Adam Goodwin. Attendance is free, but please RSVP due to limited capacity.

On Thursday, at 1:00 pm, the Audit Committee will meet. The Committee will receive a report on Workplan Scoping for ad hoc requests that outlines a proposed standardized template for Audit Committee information requests. The template is designed to clarify objectives, define scope, identify risks, and prioritize requests. Administration is seeking Committee feedback on this approach to ensure effective intake and prioritization alongside existing workloads. The template allows for fast-tracking urgent requests or detailed scoping for more complex items. Examples of 2026 ad hoc reports include the Westerner Engagement History, Risk Register, Internal Controls Schematic, and the Asset Management Plan. Using the template is intended to improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency, ensuring the Committee receives focused, actionable information while Administration can manage resources effectively.

A new fire academy launched by Red Deer Public Schools is giving Grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to graduate with Level 1 and 2 firefighting certifications. The semester-long program, delivered in partnership with Red Deer Emergency Services, combines classroom instruction with hands-on training at the City’s emergency training facility. Students pay $2,000 for equipment and instruction, significantly less than comparable post-secondary programs, and graduates can move directly into firefighting roles. Officials hope the initiative will help address recruitment challenges, particularly in rural communities that rely on paid on-call firefighters. Fire leaders say students entering departments with certifications are better prepared and can become immediate assets. Beyond technical skills, the program also builds leadership, teamwork and resilience, giving students a competitive edge if they pursue full-time positions in larger cities.

City Council is considering a rezoning proposal for a property in Highland Green to transition from low-density to medium-density. City planners suggest the amendment would facilitate "modest increases" in infill housing, such as townhomes, while adhering to current height limits and design regulations meant to preserve neighbourhood character. The proposal is facing opposition from residents, who have expressed concerns in anticipation of the March 10th public hearing. Some argue that higher density could lead to traffic congestion, noise pollution, and increased strain on street infrastructure, potentially impacting the safety of children walking to nearby schools.
- The Red Deer Homeless Foundation’s proposal for Project Nexus, a permanent homeless shelter and centralized service hub, has sparked controversy over its proposed location in the city’s north industrial area near the Pines neighbourhood. The shelter would provide 24/7 services, including 200 beds, food, and medical support, addressing a growing homeless population that reached 747 in 2024, more than double from 2022. While community members support the need for the project, they are concerned about safety, property values, litter, drug use, and potential impacts on parks and wildlife near the site. Residents have suggested alternative locations, such as the Michener area or the former Woody’s RV World site, and have started a petition opposing the proposed site. The Red Deer Homeless Foundation emphasized the extensive site search, noting that only one school is within one kilometre of the chosen site and that RCMP support would be involved. Hope Mission, the non-profit that will operate the shelter, highlighted the benefits of centralizing services and stabilizing care for the homeless population. The City has passed first reading of zoning amendments for the area, allowing the proposal to proceed to a public hearing scheduled for February 25th. I
