Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics

📅 This Week In Red Deer: 📅

  • Lime Technology Canada has acquired Neuron Mobility Canada and will gradually take over its shared e-scooter and e-bike services in Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Sylvan Lake, and several other communities. The company says the transition will be phased in over the coming months with the goal of avoiding service disruptions for riders. The City of Red Deer says it is still discussing the change with Lime, and local timelines and operating details have not yet been finalized. Officials noted there will be no financial or contractual impacts on the City, as the existing licence agreement governs operating requirements such as safety standards and customer service. Neuron has operated in Red Deer since 2021, and the City's shared micromobility program became permanent in 2024 after a successful pilot. Last year, riders travelled more than 333,500 kilometres on Neuron e-scooters across Red Deer and nearby communities.

  • Building permit values in Red Deer totalled $5.7 million in May, a steep drop from $19 million in May 2025. Year-to-date values are also down, sitting at $36.6 million so far in 2026 compared with $53.2 million at the same point last year. The decline was driven largely by residential construction, where May permits totalled about $2.1 million compared with $16.7 million a year earlier. Commercial permit values actually rose, reaching about $2.1 million for the month, up from under $1 million in May 2025. The largest single permit was a $764,000 renovation project on Edgar Industrial Drive, followed by a $600,000 interior renovation and a $450,000 conversion to accommodate a medical clinic.

  • A $500-million central Alberta transmission project connecting Red Deer to the Stettler area is now complete. AltaLink and ATCO announced that the Central East Transfer-Out project strung 135 kilometers of double-circuit transmission lines between Red Deer and the Stettler area, along with substation upgrades, after construction began in November 2023. The project adds 750 megawatts of capacity to the grid and improves the province's ability to move electricity from east central Alberta to other parts of the province. The Alberta Electric System Operator directed the two companies to build the line as part of a broader effort to make sure the transmission system can meet future demand and connect new sources of generation. The project received a nearly $284-million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, a financing deal expected to save Alberta taxpayers $135 million over the 30-year loan term.

  • Red Deer's popular Meet Me at the Park program will run from July 6th to August 28th, bringing free recreational activities to neighbourhood parks across the city. The program will visit eight different communities, beginning in Eastview Estates and rotating weekly through other neighbourhoods. Residents of all ages can take part in activities such as soccer, basketball, pickleball, arts and crafts, gardening, obstacle courses, and other outdoor games designed to encourage physical activity and community connection. The City says the program is made possible through partnerships with local organizations, agencies, and community associations, and will operate weekdays throughout the summer.

  • A completed applied research project from Red Deer Polytechnic examined how coyotes live and behave in urban environments to help residents and the City better understand how to safely coexist with them. Using wildlife camera data and field observations, the study identified areas of higher coyote activity that may indicate den sites and mapped their locations using GIS tools. The findings suggest coyotes often choose den areas near water, away from busy roads and buildings, and may orient entrances based on wind direction. The research also found evidence of den activity earlier in the year than previously documented in earlier studies. The resulting map of den locations will be shared with the City of Red Deer to improve local wildlife management and planning. The project is expected to continue with further fieldwork, including soil and vegetation analysis and searches for additional dens.
