Red Deer Minute: Parents Protest, Restricted Sales, and a New Emergency Coordinator
Red Deer Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Red Deer politics
This Week In Red Deer:
-
Despite it being the final week of the federal election campaign, there are three Council meetings scheduled at City Hall.
-
The week starts with a City Council Regular Meeting and City Council Additional Meeting at 1:30 pm today. Council is set to begin the meeting in-camera, discussing privileged information with public officials. Afterward, Council will receive a presentation from Engineering Services regarding a $75,000 project restoring wetlands in the area, then will introduce a new framework to improve transparency in their Community Grant Program, followed by a public hearing regarding an amendment to the Evergreen Neighborhood Area Structure master plan.
- On Wednesday, there will be a meeting of the Audit Committee, where Council will receive reports regarding the year-end variance of the operating budget and overall financial standing of the City of Red Deer. Although Council projected an overall deficit of $11.2 million, the reality is that the deficit is significantly lower at just $0.7 million.
Last Week In Red Deer:
- Around 50 parents protested the Red Deer Public School Division on Tuesday, and the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools on Wednesday, in response to the Boards' decisions to implement mandatory masking for kids as young as five. A province-wide petition by our friends at the Alberta Institute recently received more than 15,000 signatures against mandatory masks in schools. You can sign here if you haven't already.
-
Karen Mann, the face of Red Deer's emergency management team has decided to vacate the position for a new job in Edmonton. Ken McMullen, the Director of Emergency Management for the City said the search to fill the vacancy left by Mann is currently underway and that they hope to fill the position within the next couple of months.
- After only just getting the green light to fully reopen, many in the City's hospitality industry are again feeling hopeless following the provincial government's latest rounds of COVID-19 restrictions. One local bar owner in the City isn’t going down without a fight and says the government shouldn't be able to impose these restrictions without first proving they'll work. Sounds reasonable to us... What do you think? Does drinking alcohol after 10:00 pm increase the risk of COVID?
