- The Westerner Days Parade takes place on Wednesday at 9:30 am and features Indigenous dancers, Métis jiggers, marching bands, and an impressive array of floats, reaching the maximum of 120 entries. The parade route information is available online. The theme of this year’s Westerner Days is "Do it for the Memories” and there will be many other events taking place in the city too. You can see the full schedule online.
- Speaking of Westerner Days, we’re hosting a Westerner Days Picnic on Friday, along with our friends at the Alberta Institute and Project Confederation. We'll meet at the Kiwanis Picnic Shelter from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The picnic shelter is located adjacent to Great Chief Park. From Taylor Drive, travel west on Kerry Wood Drive, turn south on Fountain Drive, then follow the signs. To keep the event free and as accessible as possible, it will be a bring-your-own food picnic. There are some picnic tables at the site, but do feel free to bring your own blankets and chairs too! We will provide some snacks and beverages, and we did have to pay to reserve the location, so if you'd like to make a voluntary donation to help us cover costs, $10 is a suggested donation. Please RSVP here. Hope to see you there!

Officials have reminded would-be airshow attendees that the Red Deer Regional Airshow will not take place in 2024. The schedule was designed to be biennial due to a $30-million airport expansion. Safety concerns during ongoing construction make it impractical to host the event this year, despite community enthusiasm and inquiries about ticket sales. Planning continues for the next airshow, contingent upon the completion of construction, while other scheduled events like Girls in Aviation Day on September 21st and the Westerner Days Boot Scootin’ BBQ on July 18th remain unaffected.

Local entrepreneurs in Red Deer have utilized a City grant program to establish diverse businesses such as a coffee house, metaphysical shop, educational support outlet, and legal services office in the downtown area. With $6,000 remaining in available grant funding, the City of Red Deer is launching another round of Vacant Spaces Grants aimed at fostering downtown development. The program, outlined on the City’s website, seeks projects that benefit residents and begin by December 31st. Priority will be given to initiatives along specified downtown streets, aligning with the City’s goals to enhance economic vitality and community vibrancy. Applications for these grants are open until August 15th, with recipients to be announced in early September.
- Wednesday's scorching temperatures in Red Deer broke several records, including a new daily high of 34.3°C, surpassing the previous 118-year-old record of 33.9°C set in 1906. The city also experienced record electricity consumption, with 149.75 MVA, beating the previous record of 146.76 MVA set in 2013. Factors contributing to this spike included increased use of air conditioners and the city's population growth from about 97,000 in 2013 to over 109,000 presently. Despite the new highs, Red Deer's Electric Light and Power department assured residents of sufficient capacity.
